Avalon Region

This region is most famous for the brightly coloured houses in the city of St. John’s; the Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada; and nearby Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site of Canada, the most easterly point in North America.

The Avalon Peninsula, carved by deep bays and located at the most eastern tip of Newfoundland; is home to the vibrant capital city of St. John’s; and the seaport Argentia, providing vehicle ferry service to North Sydney, Nova Scotia.

A multitude of attractions are found here including the Heart’s Content Cable Station Provincial Historic Site; the Wooden Boat Museum at Winterton; the Spirit of Harbour Grace exhibit and museums at Harbour Grace; the Legacy Centre at Cupids; the Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site at Brigus; a ferry service from Portugal Cove to Bell Island featuring sea caves, museums and memorials; the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve; the historic Ferryland Museum & 1810 Lighthouse at Ferryland; the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre at Portugal Cove South; the Cataracts Provincial Park at Colinet; the Railroaders’ Memorial and Heritage Museum at Whitbourne and the Castle Hill National Historic Site of Canada at Placentia; and the port of call for seasonal vehicle ferries to Nova Scotia, at Argentia. Attractions in St. John’s include historic cathedrals, museums, art galleries and a colourful waterfront. Other sites to visit include the Botanical Garden at Pippy Park; the Johnson Geo Centre on Signal Hill; the Signal Hill Historic Site of Canada and the nearby Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site of Canada.
