Nine years ago we were privileged to attend the first motorcycle rally in Nova Scotia promoting the fight against Breast Cancer. Gord’s Ride 4 the Cure was created by the dedicated husband and wife duo; Gord & Mary MacDonald; and takes place on the beautiful island of Cape Breton. Each year hundreds of riders (last year over 800 motorcycles) unite in Sydney and ride the world famous Cabot Trail, to raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and/or the Cape Breton Hospital Foundation Cancer Centre.
Over the past 9 years; this ride has raised $516,000 for this worthy cause that probably has affected everyone reading this article; whether a family member, a friend or personally. At the time the ride started, breast cancer had already affected my family deeply with several of my relatives diagnosed, and successfully treated through surgery and related radiation and chemo therapies.
Then in 2010, I found myself receiving the news that every woman who endures the dreaded mammogram, does not want to hear – “You have breast cancer, and we are scheduling an appointment for you to meet your surgeon.” This news can take the wind out of your sails (as my family is fond of saying) pretty darn quick! But with the loving support of my husband, family and friends; I found the courage and inner peace to face this demon head-on.
I am one of the lucky ones; I am a survivor and this motorcycle rally has helped to provide the much needed funds to not only search for a cure and more effective treatments; but also provide support to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre; where others like me will spend months attending treatments, hoping their cancer was found in time.
Thank you Gord & Mary for your 10 years of dedication and commitment to finding a cure for breast cancer and helping others. As you step back as organizers; we hope a group of volunteers will continue the Ride 4 the Cure in future years. Plans and materials are available for a smooth transition if any new organizers are interested. Contact Gord at 902-539-4673 for more information.
